The big wake up for me in recent years has been in finally understanding that it was all right there in front of me, right now. All I really had to do was start practicing, let go of judgements and be willing to notice what was happening.
Mindfulness is a practice that comes from the 2,500 year old discipline called Buddhism and you can come from any religion or non-religion and still practice Mindfullness with great benefit. In a nutshell it is the practice of living in such a way as to focus on the present and see what is going on.
The basics of Mindfulness can be learned in about eight weeks and it makes dramatic differences in the quality of our lives. Specific outcomes such as reduced stress, fear and anxiety are documented. Healing of the body and mind is facilitated and focus and creativity can be increased in your life in general and on the job. It requires ongoing practice and application if you wish to experience success.
To see the living miracle of life and its interrelatedness is to be awake or present, as world renowned Zen Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh says in one of his many books "Nowhere To Go, Nothing To Do".
For me , the ability to hold my focus on the present moment, on where I am, the time I am in and the experience I am presented with gives a clarity, intensity, humbleness and understanding that is not otherwise possible. Presence is not about thinking and analysis or of being right about something, it is about seeing and experiencing things the way they are at that moment. It is about learning about your interrelatedness to all things and events.
Things are as they are and Mindfulness does not say I will be happy forever once I have mastered it. It does say that I will begin to see reality as it is and understand how everything relates to everything else. Therefore I will have a tendency to do things consciously, will learn as I go, will experience the aliveness of life and do things understanding the consequences. I will perform and experience a higher quality that is available every day.
Some moments will be ecstatically happy and delightful others will be the challenges that reality is. With the practice of mindfulness we handle it all better and the decisions we take will be better for the evolution of life, the flow of life. Stress is reduced, health often improves and life is more joyful and therefore happy.
If I cut away the profound depth that mindfulness represents and the seeming complexity that people think is there, at its heart mindfulness is a simple process to learn. At the same time it is difficult to practice enough to live mindfully. It takes willingness, commitment to yourself, compassion and an understanding of some of the techniques that help to strengthen the focus of your mind. The only way to do it is to start and it is easier to learn with a teacher and in a group.
I am looking forward to working with a few people at a time to train them in Mindfulness. We can do part of it as group work and a smaller portion with one on one coaching. Mindfulness will give improved quality in your private life and on the job. Mindfulness is a way of living the most wonderful of possibilities in all circumstances.
