"Is that a gun in your pocket or are you happy to see me?" - Mae West
The following was overheard in a bar, but it could have been anywhere.
"Well, what the hell is intimacy if it isn't sex. Hey, I mean if we are intimate we get sexy together, right. Budda budda bong bong. You know get hot and wild, crazy passionate. That is being intimate. Right!"
While there is a tiny slice of intimacy cooked up with that serving, there is not much and it misses the point in the culinary mastery of intimacy. Let´s just work with the Dictionary for a moment and see what it says.
Intimacy: the state of being intimate, something of a personal and private nature. Some synonyms for intimate are belonging, chumminess, closeness, familiarity, nearness. I can see how sex can be included in that, but intimacy is much bigger and more inclusive than just sex.
Intimate is about knowing and understanding each other. It is about sharing. Intimacy is about knowing what the other likes and dislikes. It is about hearing the other and the personal stories that form part of the other. Intimacy is about doing things together and supporting each other.
It is about dancing in the kitchen. Tickling someones back. Squeezing their bum and blowing in their ear. Being hugged and held and loved. Being personal and private together. It is about knowing and understanding each other.
Be mindful together, grow together, and learn from each other. That is the ground of intimacy.
